Community Mediation Program

POSITION:           Executive Director                

DEADLINE:          April 11, or until filled                   

MISSION:              To reduce interpersonal conflict and community violence and animosity by increasing the use of non-violent conflict resolution strategies and by making mediation more accessible in Baltimore.

CORE DUTIES: 

Lead the organization in a collaborative way that focuses on the mission, and “walk the talk” of partnership and direct, open communication which CMP teaches.  Specifically:

 

Resource Development & Management

Raise funds through individual giving to support service to the community

Continue, and make sustainable, current fundraising initiatives, including: Attorneys for Community Mediation, annual campaign with phone-a-thon, workplace giving (United Way, etc.), and Annual Mediation Celebration awards dinner & silent auction.

Work with Board & community members to develop and launch revenue-generating programs.

Manage Finances

Work with Treasurer, Finance Committee, Office Administrator, and bookkeeper to write budget, manage spending by grant, oversee contract invoicing, and track cash flows.

Responsible for overall administrative & financial accountability of the organization.

Write & administer grants & government contracts

Write, renew and report back on 5-10 small and medium-sized foundation grants annually, ranging from $5000 to $50,000.

Write, renew & administer 5-10 large and small government grants & training contracts ranging from $10,000 to $120,000.

 

Strategic Leadership

Work closely with the Board of Directors to lead strategic direction of organization

Provide staffing and continuity for Board meetings, Board Committee Meetings (Finance, Fundraising, Policy, Research, Building, Communications & Outreach)

Continually inspire & communicate with Board members about their work

Raise visibility of CMP & community mediation generally

Represent CMP in the community among potential clients & funders by networking, working with the media, and speaking at events.

Represent CMP statewide & nationally by holding a board seat with Community Mediation Maryland, a statewide network; by connecting with the National Association for Community Mediation, and by working closely with MACRO, the Maryland Mediation & Conflict Resolution Office.

 

Operational Management

Manage and design programs

Collaborate with staff and local partners to respond to new community needs for conflict resolution

Support staff and local partners in maintenance of existing initiatives, such as projects addressing Older Adults, Collaborative Parenting, City Employee conflict, Youth Mediators, Spanish-speakers, school conflict , prisoner re-entry & juvenile detention centers conflicts.

Seize local, statewide, and national opportunities to enter into new areas of conflict resolution service, when appropriate.

Supervise & support staff

Oversee a staff of 20, including direct supervision and support of a highly-skilled staff leadership team.

Recruit, hire, manage, set expectations, and celebrate accomplishments.

Direct Service

Mediate, after receiving 50 hours of training and an apprenticeship

Assist with provision of conflict resolution training to mediators & community

 

QUALIFICATIONS & CHARACTERISTICS:

The successful candidate will have strengths in the core duty areas above and will have the following qualifications:

Dedication to nonviolent conflict resolution and some knowledge of the field of mediation

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Ability to work well with people of diverse ages, ethnicities and education levels

A visionary leader who also has great attention to detail and follow-through

Ability to juggle multiple projects effectively

Excellent problem-solving skills

Competence with various fundraising methods

Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office software

Supervisory experience
